The Renaissance era is a beautiful part of human history. Originating in the Italian city of Florence, the Renaissance celebrated the ideas of antiquity and produced an array of remarkable artists and extraordinary thinkers who are still renowned today.

However, like all historical eras, the Renaissance had its fair share of psychopaths. Possessed by a twisted desire to inflict pain, the following individuals committed horrific acts of evil and murdered their victims without remorse.

1. Gilles de Rais

Gilles de Rais was a lord and a knight who fought alongside Joan of Arc as part of the French army. But when his military career came to an end in 1435, Rais engaged in a series of depraved acts.

As well as practising alchemy and magical rituals, Rais was also a sadistic serial killer. With the help of his accomplices, he snatched children off the streets (mostly boys) and brought them back to his castle. He would treat them kindly and lull them into a false sense of security.
