Throughout history, Britain has experienced plenty of monarchs. Some of them were wise and courageous, whilst others were incompetent, cruel, or obsessed with their own personal pleasure.

Of course, there’s no consensus when it comes to the question of Britain’s worst monarch. But it’s impossible to deny that the following individuals certainly deserve to be in the conversation.

1. King Stephen (King of England)

King Stephen is one of those monarchs that many people are unaware of. He reigned as King of England between 1135 and 1154, and whilst he had firm morals, he proved to be a bad king.

In 1137, Geoffrey of Anjou seized and raided Stephen’s strongholds in Normandy, prompting the king to retaliate. Stephen then led an expedition to Normandy, but this campaign ended in failure, and he was forced to make peace with Geoffrey in exchange for an expensive annuity.
