Throughout history, royalty has been synonymous with privilege. Kings, queens, princes, and princesses have always benefited from a life of comfort, wealth, luxury, and political influence.

But royalty isn’t immune to tragedy. Death, loss, and turmoil are an integral part of royal history. And whilst there have been many royal tragedies over the years, the following events were so heartbreaking they sent waves of shock across the world.

1. The Death of Prince Albert

In 1837, Queen Victoria inherited the British throne at the age of eighteen. Due to the fact she was young and female, Victoria was a welcome change from her unpopular predecessors.

Naturally, the people of Britain were interested in their new queen’s love life, and in 1840, she married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The royal couple ended up having nine children together. But their romance was torn apart by a terrible tragedy.
